Training Walk Meetups

Date: Saturday, 30 October 2021 08:45

Venue: Glenella, 56 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath  |  City: Blackheath, Australia

WALKING MEETUPS are held the last Saturday of the month (except December)

JOIN us for Morning Training Walks during 2021 in the beautiful Blue Mountains.  We generally meet at Glenella (most months), 56 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath by 8.45am for a 9.00am start.   Some walks will be conducted away from Blackheath and may start from villages such as Leura or Wentworth Falls. Check Events lisitng.  You don't have to be a Camino Pilgrim, but just someone who enjoys bush walking/hiking, knows your own walking activity ability, wants to participate and learn more about the Camino;  in like-minded company.  Perhaps it might inspire you to plan your Camino!

BE COVID-19 SAFE:  All walkers are to observe the required social distancing and good hygiene practices.  Please carry some hand sanitiser in your pack.  If NSW Health Public Heath Orders require, walkers may need to be COVID-19 double vaxed to participate in Blue Mountains Camino Supporters activities.   If using public transport and when going into stores/cafes, etc, it is mandatory to wear a mask.  If you are feeling unwell, get COVID-19 tested as necessary and please stay home until your results; please do not attend events organised by the Blue Mountains Camino Supporters group.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.  STAY COVID-19 SAFE and check with NSW Health for current information.

ABOUT morning Camino Training Walk Meetups:  Come and join with walkers from the Blue Mountains Camino Supporters group for a training walk around Blackheath before returning to Glenella, 56 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath,  in time to have lunch and for the Camino Meetup which starts at 2.00pm to 4.00pm.   We hope you can stay on and join in the afternoon activity; meet pilgrims and new friends to share your stories, information and Camino experience.  Afternoon tea provided, cost is $5.00 donation.  For information about Camino Meetups see What's On  however, Bookings are Essential.

We offer two walking routes each month generally around Blackheath with distances between 10-16kms taking 2.5-4 hours in duration depending on route.  Walks could include fire trails, uneven tracks and surfaces, sometimes walking along the road or pavement and crossing creeks.  Some routes may include up and down steps, stairways and slight inclines but there are beautiful views and some bush to enjoy (unless its a 'whiteout').  Walking poles can be useful and always wear appropriate footwear.

Route 1 Easy : You may wish to do the regular "Gourmet Coffee Walk"  from Blackheath to Medlow Bath return.  You can have a refreshment break at Medlow Bath before returning the same way to Blackheath or you can take the train (bring Opal card).  This is a reasonably flat dirt shared road, a self-guided walk approx 11kms taking about 3 hours return plus refreshment break.

Route 2  Medium to Medium+ : The alternative Camino Training Walk is more challenging involving a mix of fire trails and bush tracks and uneven surfaces, some creek crossings and generally many steps or inclines/descents.   Approx 14-16kms.  No cafe stop on route 2.  The route for the day is usually pre-determined and advertised when possible on facebook page and on the website landing page.

No matter which option you choose to walk, it is a great opportunity to test your Camino gear and pack, chat to others who may have done the Camino whilst you walk.
For some months the morning walk will be held away from our base of Blackheath, ie starting from other villages such as Leura or Wentworth Falls.  These walks will be notified under events listing and generally will be followed by an informal lunch get together, subject to COVID-19 restrictions, rather than the Camino Meetup at Glenella.
* Please come prepared wearing suitable footwear and clothing, and just in case it rains, bring a rainjacket/poncho, also bring basic first aid and hand sanitiser, ensure you have ample water - a minimum 1.5 litres and more in hot weather, a hat, sunscreen and snacks.  Depending on the chosen walk for the morning there may or may not shops or a cafe available until your return to Blackheath.  You may wish to bring snacks to eat at one of the scenic stops, likewise bring some cash just in case there is a cafe to buy a drink/eats at the half way point.  You may wish to carry your Opal card if you wish to catch train back to Blackheath (subject to availability).
